‘On The Couch’ with Hal David – interview by Art Phillips / July 2002

Hal David (1921 – 2012)

Sadly, the world lost the legendary song lyricist Hal David on September 1, 2012. Hal was an American lyricist born in Brooklyn, New York. He was best known for his collaborations with composer Burt Bacharach and his association with recording artist Dionne Warwick.

The AGSC was very fortunate in having Hal David as a guest in the intimate mode of an ‘On The Couch’ interview in July, 2002 at the home of Guy Gross when Hal was in Australia as a guest of APRA.Hal David was interviewed by Art Phillips, president of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (2001-2008), and as Art recounts: “There is no question, without Hal we would not have so many wonderful emotional connections to life’s ‘song re-call as we know it’……his vivid emotional lyrics will live on for centuries.  I had the pleasure to interview Hal for the AGSC at an industry seminar. He was amazing and inspirational – the stories, the laughter, the memories he shared with us about song after song, and most of all his true passion for life.

It was a highlight to have met Hal and to share that short moment in time, as he has given us such a life long journey to music, those endearing memories and emotional messages through his works.”
